John,

Living in NYC and having done some recent research, I can tell you this:

Per the 2005 STC Salary Survey, median salary for tech writers in NYC
metro area is $80K.

Per Salary.com, an experienced Technical Writer in metro NYC has a
market value in a range from $74-93K (base salary.)

$85K ballpark for a staff job in NYC, in other words, is pretty good,
not spectacular, but probably about right as an opening offer for an
experienced hire. Most employers will expect you to counteroffer and
negotiate, of course; you might want to do a little formal market
research so that you're better equipped to do that. (Personally, I
think Salary.com is worth the money, but others may have sources they
prefer.)
