I see that your and your coworker's statements as equivalent, and both indicate a tolerance range. +/- can be considered the same as ± -- it's merely a different way to write it (usually used if you cannot insert the ± symbol). If I were editing your document, I would mark yours to be replaced with the ± symbol (ANSI Alt+0177).

±
Synonyms: margin of error
Definition:
(1) Symbol meaning plus or minus or to express a range, e.g., if you were to write how far away a location is, you could write it as 100 miles ± 20, which would mean you believe it to be 100 but the distance could be anywhere between 80 and 120 miles.
(2) Expression of range, error, or tolerance

The symbol for "approximately" is the double wavy tilde (which I cannot type here due to the plain text restrictions).

To type the approximate symbol: Alt+0187, apply Symbol font
