Hi!  Woman here.

While I can sympathize with your objections to her adjectives, I can also
understand her worries.  Especially if she hasn't spent much time
overseas.  I accidentally wound up in a rather seedy club district in
Bangkok once.  I felt very conspicuous as a petite, white female - though
I was perfectly comfortable just about everywhere else we visited.  With
the recent abduction in Aruba and other stories about human trafficking,
she's afraid of disappearing and becoming a statistic.  And though the
odds of being taken are very low, what could happen to you afterwards is
terrifying.

In response to the original post, I'd say your chances of coming back home
are about on par with (or better than) your chances in New York.  Don't
hide in your apartment the whole trip, but don't be stupid either.  And
have a wonderful time!
