*Ideally,* the tester would be someone who has the same
level of technical literacy as your expected user but little or
no knowledge of the particular product under development.
A "non-technical person" would be fine as a tester for installing the next release of MS Word or a game; for the
installation of a web portal or a distributed computing
protein folding network, I don't think so.
