I think the authors just got their terminology confused, that's all.

Indeed, those pronouns lack definite information as to which subject they refer, but they are not "indefinite pronouns." They aren't even indefinite nouns.

The authors meant well but used the wrong term. They might restate the instruction as follows:

"Restrict the use of non-specific pronouns such as it, this, and those, especially at the beginning of the sentence."

Or, "Avoid using pronouns such as 'it', 'this', and 'those'; always specify the subject of the sentence."
