I'm aware that SnagIt does allow some editing of captured images, but I
prefer using PhotoShop for several reasons:

1 - Personal preference (layering capabilities and the ability to save
in a format I can tweak, edit, re-edit, and mess around with multiple
times without having to re-capture the screenshot again)--call that my
own personal neurosis;

That's why Save As exists. Make a capture and Save it. Make some
changes, and use Save As to save the modified version under a different
name. Make more changes and Save As another name. Don't like the
changes? Just open one of the previous Save As versions.
