Does anyone know why Word's "Find and Replace" function does not work at

me precious time. This has happened previously as well. It worked
yesterday--why not today?

I don't answer "why" questions about software behavior. However, I can offer some procedures that may fix the problem.

1. Save and close. Reboot. Try again.

If that doesn't solve the problem,...

2. a. Save and close.

b. Locate your normal.dot and save a copy to a safe place under a different name, such as KirkNormal.dot

c. Reboot.

d. Start > Run

e. In the Open field, type the following line:

winword.exe /a

This starts Word in its virgin, out-of-the-box state, with the default normal.dot, Clippy, and Enter Your Initials dialog. Find and Replace will work. You will, however, have lost all your nifty customizations that are stored in KirkNormal.dot.

f. Double-click KirkNormal.dot to open a blank document. Type something and ensure that Find and Replace still works. If not, your template is corrupt and you are SOL.

g. Save and close the blank document, which you will discard afterward.

If you get a prompt that says Word has made changes to normal.dot, confirm that you want to save the changes. This procedure should restore your customizations.

If you do not get the prompt, close Word, delete the active normal.dot, and replace it with KirkNormal.dot, which you should then rename normal.dot.

Good luck.
