I guess I'm having trouble conceptualizing why GIF would be an issue
yet PNG (which we've been using in FM exclusively for ove 3 years now)
and JPG work fine.

What in you rprocess is limiting the graphics formats to PNG and JPG?
XML on its own doesn't care.
