Printed manuals can be typographically richer than HTML
pages are, particularly if the HTML pages need to be
displayed in a reasonably consistent way in different web
browsers. Common punctuation like periods, commas,
colons, and semicolons are universally supported because
they are handled the same way in every character set.
But the handling of typographic characters like en- and
em-dashes and "curly" quotes is neither universal nor
uniform. The OP's question had to do with how list
members deal with the shortcomings and inconsistencies
(if at all).

My opinion only; I don't speak for Intel

I would expect that thinking to remain the same as it did for printed
manuals. After all does the thinking on periods, commas, colons,
quotes, etc. change between printed and online media?

But that's just me.
