There is 'register'... a set of commonly accepted
terms in a particular profession. While it is
tempting to 'assume' users know the terminology,
and give due respect to their mastery over
jargon, no one is sure there is only one meaning
of a given term.
I don't mind if ten readers go, 'yeah I know IP
is intellectual property' but I don't want even
one out of ten wondering 'you mean intellectual
property or involvency petition'
In the legal world, they say - a hundred
criminals can get away but not one innocent
should be punished.
Talking of costs, we anyway define the first
occurrence, or put the stuff in a glossary.
DNA array? the only DNA I know is the stuff that
is in the jeans (genes?)
