Anthony,

As has already been noted:

-- Unless you are working in an academic environment, you're not using
a legal copy of Acrobat, and

-- Adobe Reader 7.05 (the latest version) reads PDF files created by
earlier versions just fine.

I just wanted to point out a couple of alternatives to Adobe's Acrobat
software for creating PDFs from Microsoft Word. One combination is
free, and one piece of software is so cheap ($20) that it might as
well be free as these things go.

And there's even a third option - OpenOffice 2.0, which is
file-compatible with Word, will export Word documents in PDF format
without the need for additional software. And it's free, open-source
software; won't cost you a dime to acquire and install.

(Note: All of this assumes that you are working on a PC running Windows.)

(1) Creating PDFs with Microsoft Word, the FREE solution:

Install CutePDF Writer + GhostScript (and, optionally, Ghostview.)
Print to CutePDF from Microsoft Word.

(2) Creating PDFs with Microsoft Word, the CHEAP solution:

Buy and install PDF995 and PDFEdit995- for free with annoying ads, or
ad-free for $9.95 each (or $19.95 for a three product "suite" that
includes the first two products.) Print to PDF995 from Microsoft
Word.

(3) Creating PDFs out of Microsoft Word documents using OpenOffice
2.0, for FREE:

Download and install OpenOffice 2.0. Open the Word 2003 document you
want to convert to PDF, and choose "Export as PDF" from the File menu.

Hope this helps.
