I have both SnagIt and Irfanview installed on my machine. I love
Irfan as a quick-and-dirty graphics viewer and (extremely light-duty)
editor; it's perfect for the times when I don't want to fire up my
copy of Paint Shop Pro just to crop something.

But I would never use it for screen capture; SnagIt is superior in
every way for that function.

SnagIt's editing environment makes it a breeze to add effects, such as
the aforementioned torn and faded edges, and add annotations, callouts
or highlighting. And you can save user-defined capture profiles,
capture the entire contents of scrolling windows, capture defined
regions only, and so on.

I pay for my own tools. At $40, I think SnagIt probably represents
the best bang-for-the-buck of any single piece of commercial software
in my toolbox.

As a contrasting data point, I just willingly shelled out more than
$200 for an upgrade to FrameMaker 7.2 (it arrived yesterday), making
my total investment in Frame well north of $1000 at this point. If
Adobe gave me the kind of value for money with Frame that TechSmith
does with SnagIt, Frame, at this point, would be writing the manuals
*for* me, as well as walking my dogs at night and doing the dishes.
