Paul,
Have you looked at the TextPad XML AddOns? There are three of them at
http://www.textpad.com/add-ons/index.html. I don't know if any will help
but they just might.

Subject: reluctantly seeking unicode friendly textpad replacement

I have been a Textpad evangalist for I don't know how many years, but
due to lack of support for Unicode, I now have to find a replacement.
Currently my primary use is to make changes to XML files that are easier
in text than in parsed/validated mode using a "real" XML editor.

I searched the archives and founds lots of mentions of text editors but
no recommendation thread, especially where unicode/xml were the primary
drivers.

What are folks using in this environment?
