I'm involved in launching a new website. We want to include a search
function that will search the website. A web developer has suggested we use
Google search because it's easy and free and means we get the site up
faster. I'm not sure we want to have the Google logo on the new website. Are
there alternatives you can recommend, what do they cost, and how long would
they take to implement?

Have you checked out the Zoom search engine from Wrensoft (http://www.wrensoft.com/)? I used it at my last position and it has routines for both websites and CD/DVDs. They have a free version that is okay, but spend the $50 or so to get the professional version. When I had a problem setting the search up for a Marketing CD we were making, they responded almost immediately, found the coding problem and got us running before the day was out. Best of all, you didn't have to put the Google logo, nor any of the free ads on your site. (I hate giving away free advertising.) You can also download the PDF manual to check it out first.

Hope this helps.
