meeting's leader (chair, facilitator, whatever) should be summarizing
the action, making assignments, restating questions, calling for votes,
and other meetingish behaviors. That's what you should record, not
everything everyone says, blurts, grunts, or mumbles. >>
Sorry, but if the boss wants a verbatim transcript, than
that's what should be delivered. The person who does that
should, however, be a technical secretary, trained in shorthand.
Should Peggy (the originator of this question) have to drive
the meeting as parliamentarian, pushing back to the boss all
the things that need to be summarized or brought to a firm
conclusion? Or should the boss be taking on that role herself?
