I think that the best books on the subject are by Eric Meyer
(http://www.meyerweb.com) and Jeffrey Zeldman (http://www.zeldman.com).
"More Eric Meyer on CSS" covers the layout stuff, and includes information
on how to convert existing designs (such as those using tables) to all
CSS-layouts. Zeldman's "designing with web standards" is also a pretty
decent reference. (I know that Zeldman's is available through Amazon UK, but
I'm not sure about Meyer's.)

Until the books arrive, you can use the different tutorials, etc. at
W3Schools (http://www.w3schools.com/css/default.asp), and check out the NYPL
online Style Guide (http://www.nypl.org/styleguide/), written by Carrie
Bickner and Jeffrey Zeldman. Even though it was written for the New York
Public Library, the information can be used by anyone.
