The simple solution is the AutoNumLgl field. You can search Word Help
for AutoNumLgl, or see Knowhow.com's explanation at
<http://www.knowhow.com/Guides/ComplexNumbering/ComplexNumbering.htm>. 

AutoNumLgl requires that you use proper heading styles (which you should
have been doing anyway).
