TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
Anthony Hernandez asked about "a process for documentation projects similar
to writing specs for software; a process for spelling out the purpose of the
documentation, intended audience, etc."
In a past life, I used _Managing Your Documentation Projects_ by Joanne T.
Hackos as a training resource for new TWs in my department. As I recall,
some of the processes she proposes would be a bit cumbersome for a lone TW
(or even a small TW department), but the majority of the book was quite
helpful.
The book carries a $55 price tag, but Amazon is currently offering it for
about $35 with free shipping.
