2) The documents include certain elements that are repeated in many
places, such as a protocol number. I'd like the author to enter the
protocol number on the first page and have it automatically populate the
rest of the document. Can this be done and if so, how?
There may be a fancier way, but I've always done this by putting SET fields at the beginning of a doc and using REF fields wherever I need the values to show up. It doesn't matter how the SET fields are formatted, but you wanna format each REF field to suit the context where it appears, and include the
\* MERGEFORMAT
option to keep them formatted the way you want them. Technically, what you're SET'ing and REF'ing are called "bookmarks" in Word parlance, but used in this way they're really just like variables.
