I fully agree with David and Bill: there's a significant difference
between an API reference and what's often called an API programmer's
guide or API implementation guide (and in this thread is being called
an SDK user guide).

As for potentially useful references, you might consider joining the
Yahoo group nettechwriters: it's devoted to SDK documentation and has
a great signal-to-noise ratio. Search the archives and you'll find
information on useful educational resources, such as the
workshops/classes offered by John Darrow, Bitzone, and Gordon &
Gordon.
