Technical communication.

Just to make Lou's point explicitly for those who may not have taken it, all three of his links point to graphics that embody the principles expounded by Edward Tufte in his books and lectures. All were executed well, by people who know how to make their tools do what they want them to, on a short deadline, following the tested and streamlined internal processes their organizations have in place for specifying, designing, and executing explanatory graphics for breaking news. You can bet that no more than two or three people were involved in each instance--the illustrator and one or perhaps two editors, working collaboratively, calmly, and quickly.

There are lessons here for technical communicators and the people who manage them.
