It sounds as if John has succumbed to the "Chicken Little" approach to life.

Companies come and go all the time. If you don't like that fact, then
don't use proprietary applications with no source-code access unless
you are prepared to deal with legacy application problems.

Ask any of the former Interleaf customers!

At least, with Arbortext, should the sky actually fall, their
documents are in standard forms that wouldn't need to be changed for
other tools to work with them.
