There have been several suggestions that you provide an
explanation or justification to your colleagues as to why you need a
walled-in office as opposed to living in a cube farm.

I think providing such an explanation would only cause more ill will
against you -- it could very well come across to others that you
perceive your work as more important than theirs.

I tend to agree with those who have suggested that you just ignore
the off-handed jibes. They're adults; they'll deal with it... or not....
Either way, it should not affect you and your work. Prove that you
are a professional (in word and deed) and you will be given the
respect you deserve.
