Well, for what it's worth, I can tell you how I did it, because it was
also a career change for me.
I enrolled in the Master's program for Technical and Science
Communication at Drexel University (in Philadelphia). There are many
such programs out there, but I know Drexel's is one of the more
respected ones. Part of the curriculum was an internship, and that
turned into the job I now have.
I think your technical background should work in your favor. One
problem a lot of would-be new technical writers have is that they learn
about the PROCESS of communication, but lack the technical background
needed for the job.

I have nearly 2 years of college from 1977.
I am a former commercial Pilot that now works in the computer help desk

No one seems to know where I am to begin.
