John,

Where it gets tricky is when you use the same graphic in more than one
publication--and to locate a previously used graphic for repurposing
without having to recreate it.

One method is to store the graphic files in a central resource
directory and use a consistent naming style that does not necessarily
attribute a particular graphic with a particular publication. Then,
constructing a small database with file name and description and
perhaps a reference to any publications a given graphic is used in can
give order to the whole thing.

When this is the method you adopt, file names are no longer a major
issue. Even sequential numbering can work quite well, since the
selection is made via the database. This also eliminates the concern
about visible titles.
