I don't think the total amount is necessarily obvious. As for why, I imagine it's a decent tool for recruitment/retention. I used to work at a company that created those statements.
Me, I want a ticket to this planet where contractors are making $75/hr. :-) Maybe I need to be more aggressive.

Not having read the brochure, I can't tell if its overall tone was
petulant, patronizing, or pedantic.
In *any* company, your work costs the company more than mere salary, and
you do your best to make your work worth more to the company than it
costs. Why would a company "drive home" such an obvious point?
