I don't think there's a lot more to be said that hasn't been said
already, however...
Here in the UK there isn't the same breadth of TC courses etc and many
TWers, traditionally, moved from engineering/programming etc because
they could write (some can you know!). There is therefore a large number
of TWers with no formal qualification (not a lot existed) in the field.
To try and do something about this the ISTC (UK = STC) did some work on
'vocational standards' - basically so you could show you met a minimum
standard. It could be used by experienced writers to 'show' their
expertise (along with their experience) and also (perhaps more so) to
provide an 'apprenticeship' route into the profession for newbies.
