After a little more searching I found this:

http://www.randomhouse.com/wotd/index.pperl?date=20000613

It's an explanation, but no usage advice is given. However since the term
has two clearly opposite meanings, it's hard for me to justify its use.
Even though "everyone" may know what it means.

The "technical" part of being a technical writer tells me I should
understand the techie use of the term and allow it to remain in the doc
for the techies, but the "writer" part of being a technical writer tells
me to avoid ambiguous (in this case, contradictory) usages. The audience
for this document is largely engineers, but it will also be presented to
newbies and possibly regurgitated into sales/marketing material.

I'm curious how others resolve these kinds of things.
