Dear Techwr-L gang--

The outfit for which I'm contracting has thrown me a notation I was not familiar with, so I thought I'd tap your collective wisdom.

Given that a software product is issued as version 1.0 (which some companies just call version 1), then goes through some incremental releases (1.1, 1.2, ...) before a major change causes the Powers That Be to christen a new version 2.0, how does (should) the documentation refer to the generation of incremental releases prior to 2.0?

Would you recognize "Foo 1.x" as meaning "Foo 1.0, 1.1, 1.2, ..."?

If not, how do you represent that concept concisely in your doc?

And would you use a different shorthand INTERNALLY from what you use in the doc?
