David Allen's book Getting Things Done worked for me. It's the only
book I've seen on time management that wasn't hopelessly anal
retentive.
According to Allen, making all those To Do lists with high, medium and
low priority items is worse than a waste of time.
It's more important to be totally clear about what is possible *in
this particular moment*, *in this particular place* . Go ahead and do
low priority stuff, especially if it's something that can be finished
in a couple of minutes. Do the stuff that you're excited about doing.
Do mindless stuff when you're feeling mindless. If you're having
trouble getting a grip on a big project, just figure out what the
first baby step is and do that. (Open the file. Read the white paper.
Call the SME and arrange a meeting.) Of course there's a lot more to
it than that and he does go on and on about a system that was overkill
for my needs, but his way of thinking about work and productivity is
pretty cool.
