Standard punctuation rules, American, British or whatever, go out the
window when instructing computer users regarding what to type where.
Adopt a convention for this specialized usage and stick to it.
Some people put the required entry on a separate line; some put it in a
special typeface. If you use quote marks, you must inform the reader
whether or not to include the quote marks, etc.
If you audience is programmers and the documentation is online, make it
easy for them to copy and paste the stuff they can use directly out of
your document.
