Thanks to everyone with suggestions for my font issue. The problem
seems to be that all the Helvetica Neue versions share the same font
name space, but Windows applications can't imagine why a font would
want to be fancier than bold or italic.

I ended up solving the problem (at least temporarily) by deleting all
the Helvetica Neue versions except the two I need. I then downloaded
Font Wrangler and renamed one of the remaining fonts as Helvetica
Nude. Of course this means I'm now using a non-standard font name,
which is not an ideal situation but it's something I can address
later.
