Re: Ensuring the effect is not affected
Heya Wr-lers,
So the interview pop quiz got me thinking--I'm pretty sure I know how to
use "that" and "which" properly, which is an accomplishment in itself. And
I almost never forget that it's important to a document and its
credibility not to confuse "it's" and "its". But I can never remember when
to use effect and when to use affect.
I think of it this way: If it is active, like the verb of the sentence, it is affect.
She was not affected by complaints about her grammar. ;)
If it is a noun, it's effect
The complaint about her grammar had no effect.
The only exception to this I can think of is when affect is used in psychology, as a noun.
You also may see "effect" used once in a blue moon as a verb.
He was determined to effect a change in the technical documenting procedure.
In this case, if you can substitute the word "make", then effect is correct.
