Offhand, I can think of about a dozen words and phrases that
are sufficiently overused that I routinely scrub most occurrences
of them out of other peoples' writing when I'm called upon to
edit. But the fact that certain words and phrases are commonly
overused or misused does not automatically invalidate their
usefulness in the right places.
