I don't think I would be uncomfortable with a test, surprise or
otherwise, if it was administered by the technical publications
dept. In the only writing test I ever had to take, however, the
company's only tech writer had left and the engineering dept
had devised the test by taking some pages from an existing
document and munging the text and graphics, somehow also
trashing the FrameMaker master page and document template
at the same time. I don't know how other candidates handled
it, but it was clear to me that the sample document couldn't be
restored to its original form without rebuilding the entire
template or having access to another intact document to import
styles from. I ended up manually restyling every paragraph
and advising them of their problem, which probably didn't
help my status as a candidate, but wasn't a big deal to me; I had
already concluded there was no fit by the time I had gotten to
that point in the interview.

And guess what? The people who really did have the level of competence
that we wanted didn't flinch or break out into sweats, and were able to
produce excellent results in well under the alloted time.
