Apostrophe misuse and misuse of cognates are epidemic these days, I'm
afraid. Even among self-styled "writers" or "journalists" there are a
multitude of excuses for not having the basic knowledge of grammar and
spelling.

I agree fully, though, that there is no particular reason not to
disclose in advance that a brief editing test may be given. Since an
interview is a somewhat artificial situation that entails more stress
than day-to-day work does, removing the surprise element is by no
means an impediment to achieving your objectives.
