My boyfriend is a journalist and when he was editor of 2 papers, they gave a
writing test as a standard part of the interview. He says this is standard
in the industry. Why isn't it standard in ours?

Tell people they are getting a writing test. What's the secret? You're
hiring writers...

What is the legitimate business reason for the test being unannounced?
What results do you get from this that you wouldn't get from a test the
applicants know
Will be given in advance? (Not the questions, just that there is a
writing test.)
