The importance of working well with SMEs has often been discussed here.
Ideally, the tech writer is qualified to post a sign reading, "We speak
SME."

If you study enough to be able to follow their conversations, show sincere
interest in their current projects, leave the right foodstuffs lying around,
and never miss an opportunity, you won't need to pester them at all.
