Re: Technical Writing in China
Companies such as ZTE, in Shenzhen, China, employ English-speaking
technical writers. Would any US technical writer on this list, if
the technical writing climate in the US got very inhospitable,
consider moving there to work? That is, if the world market for
documents in English expands, would you consider going where
there's more work?
I wouldn't even move to other places in *this* country. (I'm in the Bay Area.) There are any number of reasons, both personal and professional, why I intend to keep this as my home.
Over the past couple of years as the dot-bomb ravaged the job landscape, I have been asked if I'd take jobs elsewhere, in Texas, in Mass., in, oh, wherever. My response has been essentially the same: (A) I'd be going there for work, but the rest of my life would be essentially a wasteland, and (B) as I've been downsized plenty of times, there would be no guarantee that I'd be retained 6 months down the line, or a year, etc., and *then* where would I be.
So while China definitely exerts a certain personal attraction (but definitely not a political one), as would places such as Bangkok or Singapore, my steadfast home will be right here in San Francisco.
Besides, good writers are a rare breed, and I'm *very* good.
