hi everyone,
what i'm considering right now is something like:
"from the bla bla, you can edit the user's name, user name, and password."
(the term "user name" is set in the style guide.)
leave as is? or say "the user's real name"? or another suggestion?

Hi Diotima,

I suppose the answer depends, as always, on the audience. If you were writing to the general public, I'd definitely avoid the construction. If, however, you're writing for admins with technical backgrounds, they'd be accustomed to the distinction as it's used in this context.

You could obviate the problem with "the user's given name, user name, <...>". But, I'm almost afraid that it is a dated phrase that younger people might not know. Perhaps others have different thoughts on this one?!

Another option, though a little unwieldly, might be:

"you can edit the name, user name, and password of the people/employees/members/whatever <...>"
