We follow the Microsoft Manual of Style in terms of the distinction between buttons and icons.

As Microsoft does in most of its documentation, we use "Click Add" rather than "Click the Add button". (We apply a bold tag to the button name. I tried to demonstrate this using Lycos' POWER Editor, but Lyris did not like the HTML format.)

Where possible, we don't use "the .... icon" either. For example, on the toolbar, click Help [Help graphic]. (Again, we bold the name of the button.)

Avoiding use of "the ... button" or "the ... icon" is useful to use because we localise in five languages.
