My experience (with Word) has been that if you use the Acrobat toolbar button, you get bookmarks AND hyperlinks (if, that is, the conversion ever completes - some documents just refuse to convert within practical timescales). If, however, your print to a file and then distil that file, it takes about 5 seconds and results in NO bookmarks, but you DO get hyperlinks.
