Re: Caret or Carrot
Hi, guys. First document I openned at my new gig and I find they've
used the term "carrot" when refering to the character " ^ ".
I know this as a caret. Does the rest of the world know this as a "carrot"?
It's a caret. Diamonds are weighed in carats. Pure gold is 24 karat.
Here's a parlor trick I learned in junior high school. Write the word carrot on a small slip of paper and fold it in half. Stick it in your breast pocket.
Now approach your mark and ask him or her to quickly, orally, give you answers to the following arithmetic problems: What's 2 x 7? 8 + 6? 19 - 5? 9 + 5? 24 - 10?
After several of these, all with the correct answer of 14, say, "Okay. Now name a vegetable." The vast majority of people who have not encountered this before will say "carrot," at which point you unfold your paper and show it to the person.
