If you're going to use the trace a bitmap method, I'd highly recommend Conrad Taylor's article "Line Thickness - a means of expression".
<http://www.ideography.co.uk/infodesign/eigvil/presentations/Linethicknesses.pdf>

One of the keys when doing this is to only include the larger and/or more critical details. Don't feel like you have to add every detail as they can detract from your message (apply the KISS principle). Also think about what the final dimensions will be. If the scale is too large, line thicknesses may be scaled down too much when you place the image. It is best to trace at a 1:1 ratio - and zoom in if you need to add detail.

You may also want to check out the following articles by Conrad:
"But I can't draw" <http://www.ideography.co.uk/drawing/download.html>

> Here's a cheat that has served me well:

1. Take a digital photo and insert the resulting JPEG into a new Visio
drawing.
2. Build an illustration *over* the photo, using straight lines, curves,
rectangles, ovals, etc. Add shading and fine grids as needed for the
details.
3. Delete the photo from the drawing. What's left is a clear schematic
without the clutter of a live photo. YMMV
