It has been an objective of mine at every company I have
managed technical publications for to align the requirements
and salary ranges for technical writers with those of the
engineers. When I hear things like "crafter of documentation," my first thought is not of a writer, but a DTP operator, the documentation equivalent of a CAD designer or an engineering shop machinist.

Not that I wouldn't like to have a few DTP operators on staff, mind you.
