Hi gang,
Well, it's been awhile, a long while, since I've been in this
position..but here goes:
I'm interested in your opinions on these two jobs. Yes, I know I have to
make up my own mind. Yes, I know that as a contractor I have to pay my own
taxes, but also as a contractor I have control more over my time & my
income. And although UX is where I have been and want to be again, I have
to consider all possibilities.
At any rate, here is the situation and the jobs. Any quick thoughts?

-------------
SITUATION: I have two job offers on the table. I need to decide by Monday
morning (sorry for the lateness of the post).
JOB 1: Information architect focusuing on IA, usability, & persona
development for a huge enterprise portal project. I would be creating
navigation schema, wireframes, site maps, taxonomy/ies, and profiles of
users (hopefully fully expressed as personas in a Cooper-esque manner).
Somewhat volatile, but also energetic.
Pay: $65/hour as a contractor. No specific end date, but it couild last
"some months full-time." Possibility to come onboard with the hiring
company as an employee.
Work situation: Mondays & Fridays out of my home office. Tue-Thurs on site
120 miles away (hence I'd stay in a motel or with relatives). Use my own
Apple PowerBook.
JOB 2: Senior staff consultant with an IT services firm, focusing at least
initially on technical writing. Little opportunity for user
experience-based work, but it could grow that side of the business. Stable
(as stable as jobs in IT/tech comm/UX are these days), a bit staid.
Pay: $78,000/year as a staff member plus benefits.
Work situation: Monday-Friday at client sites locally (no travel). Use
customers' Wintel PCs.
