I am frequently called upon to review and edit material written by
a variety of people, many of them at the executive level. I have
found that I can be as thorough as needed and not have any problem
with anyone so long as I preface my edits with a message that *all*
of them are merely "suggestions." In the vast majority of cases,
the reply is usually, "please make all the changes, thanks." What is
important to me is that I want to be looked upon as a source of
authoritative advice, rather than as an arbiter.

Does anyone have any tips for me on giving feedback to non writers on
their documents? I'm in a group with non-writers who are writing manuals
for training purposes. They don't know writing, or that there's anything
to know about writing. They are peers.

Their work isn't great, from the point of view or organization and
writing to a particular audience. How much feedback to give? Management
does want me to advise. I've been burned in the past (at a different
company) for doing this, as it was not appreciated.
