Hi Joyce,

If "SOA" is pronounced as an initialism, you would precede it with "an". It
all depends on the pronunciation of the acronym as it is read aloud, as in
"URL", which would be preceded by "a" because the beginning sound when you
pronounce "URL" is 'you..' (a consonant sound), thus "a URL"... hope this
helps.

Do you write "an SOA" (pronouncing SOA as an initialism) or "a SOA"
(pronouncing it as an acronym)? Why?

I can't find any consistency in usage; it's often used both ways on the same
page!
