Word 97 is still in fairly widespread use. I come across it in about 10% of
my customer comapnies.
The fundamental file format is the same from Word 97 through Word 2003, but
with additions to accommodate extra features as you more through the
versions. Therefore, opening a document or template in a later version of
Word than it was created in will normally be OK. (Exceptions will generally
be because some corruption has crept into the document.)
The main limitations for Word 97 are the limited range of font colors, and
the inability to manage nested tables.
If you have VBA code in the template, this will need to be tested. In most
cases there shouldn't be a problem, but it does need to be checked, there
are a few differences in behaviour. Also, Word 2000 and later have the
facility for digitally signing VBA code as a protection against macro
viruses. Unsigned code will not run unless you either sign it or modify your
security rsettings as necessary.
