Someone from this list wrote me privately today and among other things made
a suicide threat.
I wrote back, but I haven't received a response.
Before I wrote to the person, I was so concerned about it that I initially
wanted to forward the mail to a trusted friend and get some advice on how to
respond. In my haste, I sent the message back to the person who sent it,
instead of my trusted friend. The message contained my question to my
trusted friend. Immediately after discovering this, I wrote to the person
and explained myself, because the person could easily see I sent that
person's e-mail to a third party without his permission. I advised the
person to seek help and asked if indeed the intention was to do harm to her-
or himself. I also talked about some of the technical writing-related issues
that were discussed earlier in the day.
If you are that person, I need you know that I was really concerned about
you. You have since posted several times to the list after e-mailing me and
after my response to you, and so I have to conclude that you were probably
not serious. That you could not even respond to my obvious concern tells me
there's a lot more wrong here than meets the eye.
I'm writing this to the list for the benefit of anyone else who may have
received an e-mail from this person containing a suicide threat. I have
concluded it's a hoax by a person who, although perhaps not really suicidal,
is nonetheless disturbed.
